Whether happiness is an emotion or a state of mind, I know one thing’s for sure… It beats being unhappy. I’ve come across people who are unhappy about their life, their income, their job, even the weather. So I decided to write about some of the things that I do to stay happy.
Here are 7 ways to be happier:
- Understand that everyone is different
Accept that what works for someone else doesn’t necessarily work for you. I hear people talking about all sorts of things like waking up really early in the morning. Plain and simple, we’re not all the same. Some people are morning people and some are night people. Everyone is different. It’s the same with hobbies and passions. Rather than trying to copy others, find out what makes you happy and then do it your own way.
- Manage expectations
Firstly, learn to manage your expectations of other people so that you don’t get disappointed when they don’t deliver. No one’s perfect and we all need grace. But most importantly, learn how to manage the expectations that you place on yourself. Sometimes, we’re our own worst critic and we need to allow ourselves some room. If we don’t complete everything on our to-do-list today, it’s okay your business will still be there tomorrow. If you didn’t get that big sale, that’s okay too. There are plenty of other opportunities out there.
- Stay away from negative people
Negative people have a problem for everything. Negativity is infectious and it messes with momentum and your mind set. I believe it’s best to avoid negative people completely.
- Do something you love
I hear so many people say that they hate their job and then believe that it’s all life has to offer them. The average person will spend 40+ years working. That’s a very long time to be doing something that you don’t enjoy.
- Be grateful
Look around you and what do you see? Is there a person or something that you’re fond of? Something that produces a happy memory or perhaps your just grateful for the trees and the air and the warm sun on your skin? There is so much to be grateful for in this world. What is one thing that you’re grateful for right now?
There’s a real warm and fuzzy feeling that you get when you give something to someone in need. If you haven’t experienced it before, you have to try it. Try giving a homeless person a meal or surprise someone with a coffee. Or just start with something smaller like smiling at people. Giving is a great way to be happier.
- Have faith
Believe that you were created for a purpose and you’re not just some random act of nature. Believe that what you’re doing is special and that you're destined for success. Believe that you make people’s lives better in some way. Just start believing.
